At MCFT, we want more women to consider careers in commercial catering and refrigeration engineering.
Our apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn practical skills, gain recognised qualifications, earn a salary and build a long-term career — even if you have never worked in engineering before.

While at the academy we learnt through theory and practical lessons on actual Catering equipment. We were able to do a taster week out in the field, this helped everything I had learnt click into place. Being a novice, the knowledge being taught was always given at a level I understood"

Apprenticeships at MCFT
Apprenticeships blend real work with training and study for a specific role. You’ll acquire new skills, gain experience, and earn a salary simultaneously. Choosing to be an apprentice can be an exciting and rewarding career path.

At MCFT our apprentices will join a 24 month programme and will start their first 3 months at the Training Academy, where they will get a full introduction to industry, health and safety fundamentals, electrical safe isolation training, and gain the basics of the technical knowledge needed in relation to their job role.
Following their 3 months, they go out into the field with a coach to continue their learning on the job, and visit the academy for 1 week every few months for further training. After 24 months, they will enter into “gateway” which is the preparation period for end point assessments.

Earn While You Learn
As an apprentice, you’ll receive a salary while gaining work experience. You’ll learn on the job and apply your new skills in a real work environment - for a long term in demand career.
Nationally Recognised Training
The training you receive is recognised and valued by employers throughout England and the UK. You’ll gain Level 3 Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Engineering Technician.
No Student Debt
We offer you a real-living-wage starting salary, with generous benefit package. Apprentices don’t pay tuition fees and aren’t eligible for student loans, so there’s no student debt to worry about. You’re still entitled to student discounts and can get a TOTUM card.
No experience required
MCFT recruits people with the motivation and potential to learn a new trade, rather than expecting applicants to arrive as trained engineers. We provide you with the support and world-class training, you just need to bring the motivation.
FAQs
Are trade careers not for women?
Your ability to diagnose a fault, work safely, communicate with a customers and learn technical skills has nothing to do with your gender.
What if I'm not strong enough?
Engineers use diagnostic tools, technical knowledge, safe working methods and problem-solving skills. Nobody should rely on brute force to complete a task that requires proper equipment or safe handling.
Is it male dominated?
We are proud of our diverse workforce, yes trades were historically male dominated, but we are trying to change things. At MCFT, you will feel part of the team from day one! We are proud to have a high percentage of women throughout our organisation both field and office - from junior to senior positions.
Can I grow within the role?
There's no ceiling, if you're willing to work hard, then no matter who you are - theres no stopping you! Just don't take our word for it, Sarah one of our senior technicians has worked her way through the business from apprentice to leading a team of engineers in our busiest region - London.
What support will I recieve?
You'll have support throughout your journey - dedicated coached at the Technical Academy, then a coach (experienced engineer) when you are out in the field. You will always have someone to ask for support, and continued training and development - both internal and via manufacturers. Ensuring you are always learning and supported - no matter how senior you become.
What's a typical day look like?
There isn’t one! Every day is different, different locations and different customers - from schools and colleges to commercial kitchens at well-known sporting venues. You will have your own allocated sites upon completion of the trainee programme where you will build relationships with your customers and really get to know the ins and outs of each kitchen you come across. ๏ปฟ

As part of #NAW2026, we were proud to host an Apprenticeship SME Roundtable at MCFT. Led by Anthony Impey, Chair of the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network - the session brought together employers, sector ambassadors, and industry leaders to share practical insight into what it means to directly deliver apprenticeship training.
MCFT, alongside Darke & Tayor, shared our experiences as employer providers - the challenges, the lessons learned, and the impact apprenticeships are having on our business, discussing what it really takes to build and grow high-quality apprenticeship programmes, before an engaging roundtable discussion chaired by Anthony.
The purpose of the session was clear: to help shape a best-practice guide that will support more SMEs to become employer providers, strengthening skills development and creating sustainable talent pipelines within their own organisations.

โป๏ธ Giving Equipment a Second Life. During HRH’s recent visit to open the MCFT Technical Academy, The Princess Royal showed a particular interest in our Pre-Loved Programme — an initiative very close to our hearts.
Through this programme, equipment recovered from customers in reasonable condition is refurbished by our apprentices, developing their hands-on technical skills while supporting a more sustainable industry. Once restored, these items are rehomed — through partners like Plunkett UK — to local community causes, across the UK such as soup kitchens, sports clubs, village shops and pubs.
Less waste, stronger communities, and invaluable learning experiences for our apprentices. ๐๐ช

๐ A Royal Opening for MCFT’s New Technical Academy. On 18th September, we had the honour of welcoming HRH The Princess Royal to officially open MCFT’s brand-new Technical Academy in Reading.
Her Royal Highness toured the new facility, viewing our refrigeration and catering training spaces, classrooms for theory-based learning and dedicated exam rooms. During her visit, The Princess Royal met with trainers, trainees, interns, and apprentices — both from the UK and overseas — as well as a number of industry representatives and members of the Learning & Development community.
๐ The MCFT Technical Academy was created to Build Skills for the Future of Our Industry. Our in-house training programme captures enthusiastic, motivated people, usually with no engineering knowledge and sees them through from trainee status to a fully qualified engineer. We’re proud to play our part in addressing the skills gap and empowering the next generation to succeed.

We are also passionate about the planet - As part of our CSR programme, MCFT has set up a carbon offset programme to counter balance some of the energy used in running the business. As part of this we've donated over £56,000 to @theheartofenglandforest, which equates to over 16,300 trees!๐ณ. Our contributions as Planting Partner - have helped support the charity's mission to reverse centuries of woodland decline by creating and conserving a huge broadleaf forest, protecting and securing the forest for generations to come.
