Is sustainability a factor when selecting your suppliers?

Since 2011, McFarlane Telfer has been a dedicated friend of the Heart of England Forest. The forest stretches across Warwickshire in the heart of England – from the ancient Forest of Arden, south to the edge of the Vale of Evesham. It’s an area dense in cities, towns and industry, hence creating a place to walk under shady canopies and through airy glades, away from the bustle of city life.

Their vision is to plant, protect and preserve a huge broadleaf forest – a place of tranquillity and natural beauty that’s open to anyone and planted with the help and support of everyone.

6 years ago, McFarlane Telfer were looking around to find a way of carbon offsetting their business. They came across The Heart of England Forest and particularly liked the fact that the project was UK based, and the results could therefore be visible and tangible.

Business Development Executive, James Perton reports:

“I recently spent the morning with Mark, Chris and Craig at the Heart of England Foundation Trust who we have supported as an organisation since 2011; and evidently we are one of two of their longest standing commercial partners!

Currently they have 6,000 acres of forest planted but their end goal is 30,000 acres across the county of Warwickshire.

Our contribution to the forest is calculated using the 2015 emission factors published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). To do this, Louise Reynolds, QHSE Manager, collates all of our data on energy use and transport from office commuting, engineer vans on the road, cost of running the office and any international air travel to give a total carbon emission tonnes score.

For example, this year our Total Carbon Emission Tonnes (TC02E) has worked out to be 592.92 tonnes of carbon emissions. This will results in a £6,500 donation to the Heart of England Foundation Trust and ultimately the planting of 1,500 trees; adding to our total of 5,000 since 2011!”
